Download VMware from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

Install it via clicking the download the following the installation instructions.

Download the latest Ubuntu version from http://www.ubuntu.com/ .

Start VMWare and click "Create a new virtual machine". Select in the dialog the downloaded .iso file from Ubunutu. VMWare should detect the version of Ubuntu you are installing and present a simplified installation process. You only have to specify the user, password and the name of the installation and the rest of the installation will be automatically performed by VMWare.
