Podcast from Dan Ariely “Predictably Irrational” and OpenSource

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Dan Ariely is the author of the book “Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions” and discusses in this podcast his theories under the content of OpenSource with Dan Bricklin.

This is an older podcast, but well worth listening too. They especially discuss the difference between free and non-free on the consumer perception and how it influences our decisions. He continues how payments change the perception of people about social norms and work and how it influences their motivation. He also discuss how people tend to leave to many options open and what this may mean for OpenSource Software.

This podcast is one of the most informative podcasts about social norms and Open Source I have found.

KDE on Windows

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

I have to use Microsoft Windows on my laptop due to several required applications which only run on Windows. Due to this fact I lost a little bit sight of KDE over the last years.

While reading a blog post about the latest KDE 4 isn’t too bad after all I remembered that the KDE project started a port of the major KDE applications to Windows a few years ago.

It seems that this project is very active and is producing impressive results.

KDE on Windows

They even have an installer for Windows.

Windows Installer for KDE

Unfortunately when I tried to use KNode I received a memory error. For details please see the KNode Bug report .

But I assume that solving this issue will only be a matter of time and that soon I’ll be able to use the powerful KDE Personal Information Manager (PIM), e.g. Kmail, Kalendar, KNode, on Windows.

Many thanks to the KDE team!

Reflections on Predictably Irrational

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I recently read the book Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely. I really enjoyed his insights into motivation and personal judgement of values. If you don’t have the time to read the book you may want to listen to this podcast which contains the core of the book: Dan Brinklin’s interview with Dan Ariely.

What I personally found most interesting is the chapter about options. The book clains that people tend to leave to many options open.

Dan advices that we should leave options, which are of no value for us, behind us. Otherwise you spread yourself to thin over too many options.

I’m convinced by his argumentation and I see in myself a pattern that I like to leave options open. I’m playing with several programming languages, IDE’s and have lots of technical books about a wide-spread range of topics.

I should depart from a technology if I believe that another is more appropriated from my tasks. But of course I need to be open for new technologies and trends.

Therefore I decided to do the following:

  1. I will stop playing around with several IDE’s and focus on only one IDE
  2. I will get rid of technology books and articles if I have not read them in 2 years. Two years are long enough; if I have not read then in two year I propertly will never read them.
  3. I also have several currently unused projects which I was planning to “fix later”. I will just leave them as they are.
  4. I will not maintain Articles from www.vogella.de anymore if I’m not using that technology anymore and if there I no public interest in them.
