This book summerizes several tutorials I publish on my website. It includes the Eclipse IDE introduction tutorial, the JUnit tutorial, Debugging with Eclipse, my Mylyn Tutorial and my favorite Eclipse shortcuts. The full content of the book is still available online on my website.

I decided to select a official licence for usage of my content so that others have better information on how they can use it. As far as I can tell the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Germany (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) looks like the right licence to me.

Therefore, unless otherwise stated in the tutorials, I put the tutorials on http://www.vogella.de under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Germany (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) licence.

Attribution for a translation or reproduction which is available on the web would be a link to the original article as well as mentioning me as the original author. This attribution should be clearly visible at the beginning of the article.

If you use the material in a non-web form an attribution should be given in the same spirit. For example if you print the material for your university class you would include a page which states the original author as well as the link to the content on the web.

Neil Barlett suggested to clarify the non-commercial part. My understanding is that this means that you cannot earn money by replicating or translating the content, e.g. via advertisements, selling books, etc.

I hope this help other to translate my tutorials and to spread the word about Eclipse, Android and other Java related programming around the non perfectly english speaking world.

Git is popular, especially in my main focus areas, Eclipse and Android.

Since a while I’m working in converting my tutorials into offline versions. The Git tutorial is the first one because it has no images. To my surprise it was still a huge amount of work. I hope the second book will be easier, as I learned a lot about epub, mobipocket, design, DocBook, XSLT transformations, Apache Ant, Inkscape and other tools.

Just to set the right expectations, the Distributed Version Control with Git has the same content related material as the online version. I hope that having this material also available for the Kindle is helpful. Is also allows you to read the online version before deciding if you want to get the book offline.

I wanted to have something which represents the quest for knowledge and high moral values. Also fighting evil things would be a fitting scheme.

I believe a journey is something which represents this very well. Also I thought a wanderer would be a good representation. Also we know the quote that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Great programmers are still called wizards. Like in good old Unix times.

I obviously did not create the artwork myself but the first time in my life I hired a designer. I did though
made the first outline and asked him to change his drafts a few times. So I feel like I had a big influence in greating my own logo.

I really like it, I feel it represents me and my webpage well.

[Update] New Logo

The one request I constantly receive since approx. 4 years is that my tutorial should use syntax highlighting for the code.

I finally took the time to implement this. This was quite time consuming as I build most articles from Docbook sources and I hadn’t touched my build process in the last 3 years. So I had to re-learn what I did a few years ago and change it so that I get syntax highlighting. I also took the time to clean everything a bit up so hopeful future changes will be simpler.

I hope you like the result, I also tried to improve the look with improved stylesheets.

Installing on Ubuntu is simple, please see Download site and explanation. Please note that the example below uses the 64bit version.

This will add the Google repository to your system so an apt-get update & upgrade will keep mod_pagespeed up to date.

A quick check with http://www.webpagetest.org showed that it speeds up vogella.de significantly. I used my Android tutorial as example.

Pretty cool performance improvements for 5 minutes of installation effort.

Thanks to Google for making the web faster. I hope this module gets contributed to the Apache HTTP server.

New in this list is HTML5 which I figure I should get very familiar with.

I’m also planning to revive my challenge of the month series in which I try to do something different or to get something done in a certain month.

Of course I have lots of little things to do but this focus list and my monthly focus topics should help me setting priorities. This is very important for me as there always seems to be the next great framework, tooling, language around the corner.
